| “Appealing and accessible” is how the Canadian
Broadcasting Corporation’s Danielle Charbonneau describes
the music of Frank Levin. Fanfare Magazine calls Levin’s
music “deft, straightforward and quietly gracious.” Levin
composes expressive, melodic piano works, songs and small ensemble
pieces. His sophisticated classical/popular crossover style, while
retaining a respect for classical form and harmony, draws inspiration
from contemporary popular music, jazz, blues, ragtime, folk songs,
and even 20th century serialism. Levin began piano lessons at the age of seven. Inspired by the
piano concertos of Rachmaninoff, he began writing music when he
was twelve. He attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music
where his studies focused on harmony, counterpoint, and form and
analysis with Dr. Sol Joseph and the renowned composer John Adams.
Later he studied popular song writing and arranging with film composer,
Gary Remal and jazz theory with Jim Grantham.
Boston, Schaum and The Willis Music Companies have published Levin’s
piano music. His two “fake books” are published by Mel Bay.
Scott Pratt has released two CDs of Levin’s piano works
and the noted cabaret performer, Wesla Whitfield has recorded four
of Levin’s Christmas songs including the award-winning, “Never
a White Christmas.” Sound clips are provided in the Recordings/CDs
section.
In addition to his focus on music, Levin has maintained a keen
interest in writing and the visual arts. Some examples of his forays
into these fields are included on this website. Copies of his more
recent artwork suitable for framing are available for purchase
as noted in the Art Works section.

Levin writes the kind of charming, unassuming, skillful
